The Coleorton 2000 Committee was initiated in 1998 to devise a way of commemorating the new millennium. We developed the Millennium Garden in a plot of land donated by Joan Cull, erected a commemorative sign and organised various celebrations and events.
More recently the Group has been concerned with researching, recording and making publicly available local heritage, social, industrial and family history. We have also supported various restoration projects, for example the Communal Bakehouse on The Moor, and our name was changed to "The Coleorton Heritage Group".
During 2023 we realised we were at a point where our plans include the acquisition of somewhere to store and display documents and artefacts and to have a place where people can come to research Coleorton families and history.
To do this we needed to change from being a fairly loose, albeit constituted, association of interested residents to an incorporated body legally entitled to own or lease property, employ people when necessary and to take advantage of tax relief on donations. So we have registeres as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). This is a legal entity with trustees and members. A bit like a limited company trustees and members, while needing to follow strict rules, procedures and accounting practices, are not liable at the end of the day for debts incurred by the Organisation. At an EGM (Extraordinary General meeting) on Tuesday 30 January 2024 at The Beaumont Centre, Peggs Green our members voted to become a CIO.
